Psalm 45

A Teaching Psalm: a Song of Love

There is certainly a great need for this teaching! If there is something that is very difficult for people to learn—believers included—it is to love one another in spite of everything that displeases them. The words of the writings in the New Testament testify to this fact with very strong and very clear words.

The perfect example of pure Christianity is to be head over heels in love. It has happened that an heir to the throne has renounced the throne along with the entire royal and imperial riches and earthly grandeur because he fell in love with a sinful person.

When Christ wooed us, and we said “Yes,” then we were, as the apostle Paul describes it, “betrothed . . . to one husband . . . .” (2 Cor. 11:2); not to a sinful person, but to God’s only begotten Son who gave His life for us, humbled Himself, and suffered a cruel injustice and shameful reproach from sinful people, among many other things. However, now as our Sanctifier, interceding for us with the Father and filled with all the virtues, He has forgiven us very much and is not tired of us.

Just imagine! This glorious Son of God fell in love with us, with you, my beloved brother and sister in the Lord!!! Tell me then, preferably after a thorough and detailed reflection, what very good reason you have for being in love with Him! And how incredibly meaningless and thoughtless it is not to be in love with Him and to forget it to the insane extent that the trivialities of this world can get you to be dissatisfied, and to forget Him, your Betrothed and Beloved—this glorious Son of God!!!

The only fitting thing is, in a manner of speaking, to be “wildly in love” with Him to such an extent that all the difficulties and opposition of the world, everything that people can do against us, all bad treatment by people, etc., etc., are to be reckoned as nothing! It is almost ludicrously stupid to bother the least about all this world’s annoyances while He is my Beloved, and I am His!!!

This is really something to learn, something for which to receive grace to practice during our time of engagement!

Many years ago a patent medicine was being sold that was supposedly good for almost all illnesses. However, such a thing does not exist. Praise God that in the spiritual realm there is something that is of help for everything: a burning, boiling-hot reciprocal love for Him who has loved us first and who wooed us with the result that we are now His betrothed and will be His bride in all eternity!

Compared to this, everything else automatically loses its radiance and its power of attraction.

Jesus Himself said this with all simplicity and clarity: “If you love Me, [then] you will keep My commandments.” John 14:15. By saying that, He has actually said everything! This is the very thing that is usually so very difficult that the majority of believers are convinced that it is impossible, even that no one can live like that. They think that it is completely impossible.

However, Jesus’ teaching is, according to John 14:15 among other scriptures, that if we love Him, are in love with Him, then it will be carried out. In other words, if we break His commandments, if we sin, the reason is a lack of love on our part! Then our reciprocal love for our heavenly Fiancé is far, far from boiling-hot! Then we are far from what we can call being “deeply in love” with Him!

Let us now look at Psalm 45, verses 1 and 2: “My heart is overflowing with a good [pleasant] theme; I recite my composition concerning the King; my tongue is the pen of a ready writer. You are fairer than the sons of men; grace is poured upon Your lips; therefore God has blessed you forever.”

The first sentence of Psalm 45 in the French Bible is translated as follows: “Words full of charm are boiling in my heart.” This is enormously different from being sour and bitter, grumpy, unthankful and discontent, dissatisfied, jealous, envious, offended, irritated, upset, hot-tempered and angry, argumentative, contentious, quarrelsome and full of demands, sad, discouraged and in despair, reproachful and accusing, despondent and arrogant, “under the weather,” in a bad mood, loving money, being unfaithful, conceited, and all other sin and stupidity and utter madness!!!

Why do pleasant, charming words flow out from our mouth? Because we are so deeply in love! Why do all the good things and everything we write flow out so quickly? Because we are so deeply in love with such a marvelous Person, which is only reasonable! Why does it boil like this instead of burning quietly and evenly? For the same noble reason. Therefore: it is well-founded! This is something other than being dull and listless, late and slow and lazy!

It is not so strange that we see beauty and glory in Him! But how can He see beauty in us? Ps. 45:11. It is because He Himself transforms us so that we become like Him. If we so desire, we can also reply that it is because He has fallen in love with us. Silence—what more do you desire???

Then we wholeheartedly no longer desire anything else. Then we are and we become thoroughly and chronically happy—with or without all kinds of things.

First and foremost it pays, my beloved, glorious, precious, chosen, and genuine friends, to be diligent to bring this glorious, thoroughly healing love relationship into perfect order; that is, make it fully functional, as quickly as possible.

All praise to our heavenly Betrothed, the wonderful Jesus Christ!!!

Your blessedly happy, fellow infatuated—
