“You Have Ravished My Heart . . .
my sister, my spouse; you have ravished my heart with one look of your eyes . . . .” Song of Sol. 4:9. “What a fullness of charm is in your love, my sister, my beloved . . . .” V. 10 (French tr.)
Whatever dwells in the heart shines forth from the eyes. When the Bridegroom glances at His beloved bride, He clearly sees mirrored in her eyes an inexpressible longing to be like Him and to please Him by doing all His will, so that He is completely ravished by her noble desire!
There is quite a bit to be said about this! However, most believers are totally ignorant of it because of their unbelief and complete lack of wholeheartedness.
The above scripture fits perfectly for Christ and His wholehearted bride, as much in love as she is. However, it would be utterly ironic to try to apply this to halfhearted, lukewarm “Christians.”
The Bridegroom exceeds all possible description in virtue, mind, and being. And His bride, whom He molds just as He desires her to be, surpasses all others in her wholeheartedness, her noble desire, and her longing. Therefore they are a good match.
It is precisely these qualities that He has courted, that have affected Him and still have such a ravishing effect on Him!!! Consequently, He is already in love with her before she is perfected!
He can justifiably be in love with her without risking being disappointed in her, for it is in His power to perfect her. He has not made a mistake! He is thoroughly acquainted with her. There is no doubting her noble longing to be like Him, to become His worthy bride.
When she wholeheartedly believes that He loves her so dearly, that His whole desire is for her, then all the glory of the world has forever lost its attraction, and then all the evil of the world and all its annoyances are nothing in her eyes! Then it will be like this: If I have You, I have enough! That will put an end to all the sin and madness of this world!
Then His love weighs so overwhelmingly heavily on the one scale that everything else becomes like feathery down on, the other scale!
This is what it means to be betrothed to such a wonderful person, to have such a beloved! See 2 Corinthians 11:2. Here it is clearly written that the apostle Paul had espoused the church to one Man, Jesus Christ, in order to present it as a chaste virgin to Him.
And the fact that this marvelous masterpiece requires extremely intensive labor is evident from the next verse!
Seeing that Christ is so unbelievably enamored of us, it is not very suitable to say something like this (for example), “There is no one who cares for me, so there.” Or, “If Brother X has said that or done that, I might as well forget about everything” i.e., being espoused to Christ.
The fact that a brother or sister said or did something that ought not to have been said or done couldn’t possibly be sufficient reason to break your engagement to Christ, could it??? He didn’t sin, did He?
It would be insane for a person to act like that if they believed they were betrothed to Christ. However, the true explanation is completely different; namely, that something like being betrothed to Christ had never entered their mind.
They have never managed to believe something so great, something so glorious. There is a very good reason for that; namely, they have definitely not given Him their whole heart, because He certainly has not wooed halfhearted people!
Indescribably blessed and happy and highly exalted over all the trivialities of this world is the person who has given his whole heart to Christ, believing that he is as deeply loved by Him as the Song of Solomon so sincerely and powerfully testifies!!!
