You Have Been Our Dwelling Place in All Generations

“Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations.” Ps. 90:1. This is what Moses said in praising God.

God, by His holy laws and commandments, had made His holy and glorious dwelling with the people of Israel. If they stayed within this dwelling—His holy laws and commandments—they were safe, and God blessed them abundantly.

In Psalm 84:1 we read, “How lovely is Your tabernacle, O Lord of hosts!” And David sings in Psalm 26:8, “Lord, I have loved the habitation of Your house, and the place where Your glory dwells.”

Outside, among the Gentiles, people did not have these safe, good laws that brought such glory and blessings with them. On the contrary, darkness and insecurity ruled among them.

In the new covenant God has raised His dwelling place through the laws of the Spirit of life, which He has given by His beloved Son, Jesus Christ. If the first dwelling place was glorious, then the dwelling place of the new covenant is far more glorious. The first glory passed away, but the dwelling place and the glory of the new covenant will last forever.

We are set free from the terrible embrace of sin and death by the laws of the Spirit of life. Rom. 8:2. There is no condemnation in this dwelling place; on the contrary, there is light, life, joy, peace, and glory. It is vital that we enter in before the door is closed. Outside, darkness and a sinister atmosphere rule because of unrighteousness, lying, hate, insolence, and arrogance. All this evil increases constantly, and when Christ returns, night will have settled over the earth. How blessed it is to walk around in these dark times with life and light within us as we await the coming of Christ with joy!

We will become a dwelling place in whatever area we have been permeated by the laws of the Spirit of life. We are being filled with the fullness of God’s wisdom and goodness, and we grow together with the others in sincere fellowship to a holy and glorious temple “in whom the whole building, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord, in whom you also are being built together for a habitation of God in the Spirit.” Eph. 2:21-22.

God will raise up this dwelling place for the nations in the millennium and on the new earth. Rev. 7:15; 21:3, 24. Then there will be safety and righteousness, and tears and need will vanish.
