Justifying Yourself Before Men
“And He said to them, ‘You are those who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts. For what is highly esteemed among men is an abomination in the sight of God.’” Luke 16:15.
Very few people will acknowledge that they esteem the things that are great in the eyes of the world. However, what they actually seek after, and what they buy, proves that they esteem the great things of this world. We need to consider this. Such people also feel a judgment in their spirits, and so they attempt to justify themselves before men. They always have an explanation for what they are doing and buying, so that no one should believe they esteem the things that are considered great in this world.
Those who possess spiritual discernment understand right away when they hear such explanations that such people do not have the testimony of the Spirit who witnesses with our spirit that we are children of God. Rom. 8:16. The lack of this testimony of the Spirit makes them restless in their spirit. In order to come to rest and soothe their conscience, they come with a long list of explanations so they can receive a good testimony from people. This is truly a bad substitute for the testimony of the Spirit.
