Drink of the Spirit

Drink of the Spirit

“And have all been made to drink into one Spirit.” 1 Cor. 12:13. Much is said about being filled with the Holy Spirit, and the way in which this is supposed to occur. In the above quoted scripture one way is described: we are to drink of the Spirit. The Spirit is also described as living water. Jesus invites us to come to Him and drink, and out of the lives of those who believe in Him shall flow rivers of living water. John 7:37-39. Paul compares it to drinking wine. Eph. 5:18.

What do we drink from? The Word of God is the cup from which we drink. “The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.” John 6:63. We shall not just read His Word; we shall also drink of the Spirit that is in His Word. We can also drink of other spirits by listening to the words of man. If someone stands up and speaks unbelief, and you lend an ear to what he says, you are drinking of that spirit. This is how many people proclaim the Word of God, but they pervert it by putting another spirit into it.

“And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls, having in her hand a golden cup full of abominations and the filthiness of her fornication.” Rev. 17:4. Here we read about the harlot. Her heart is divided between God and the world. Paul also fought against her. Phil. 3:18-19. The workers mentioned here are deceitful workers. They also use God’s Word, and many people say, “They are using the same Bible we use.” When people see the golden cup they feel it is safe to drink from it. They do not notice that there is another spirit in it.

We, on the other hand, have received another Spirit to drink of; and so we drink until we rejoice, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in our hearts to the Lord, giving thanks to God and the Father for all things, being subject to one another in the fear of God; etc. This is how we should read the Word of God.

People are constantly tormented by anxieties, but if they would drink of the Spirit in Jesus’ words, “Fear not, little flock,” they would begin to rejoice. Read Luke 12:22-40, meditate on it, and drink your fill of it; then you will rejoice. You need to drink until you rejoice in all your circumstances.

Also, difficulties arise and you cannot understand the reason behind them. Then you need to drink yourself full of the Spirit. 1 Pet. 4:12-16. You need to drink of the Spirit that is in these words; you need to drink until you rejoice and give thanks for all things, singing with grace in your heart to the Lord.

Life is wretched if we live by bread alone. However, life will become glorious if we live by every Word of God. Luke 4:4. There are many believers who pray over and over again to be filled with the Holy Spirit, but they do not want to drink of Him. God has given the Holy Spirit to those who obey Him. Acts 5:32. When we drink we present ourselves to a life of obedience. We become more and more apprehended and enthusiastic. Someone who loves the world and the things that are in the world cannot drink like this. Only those who are disciples and have forsaken everything can really be happy and rejoice in all the circumstances of life.
