The Called

“But we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block and to the Greeks foolishness, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.” 1 Cor. 1:23-24.

The Jews were the worshipers in that time, and the Greeks were unbelievers—heathen. Paul’s preaching had a threefold effect; the Jews were scandalized and took offense, and the Greeks thought it was ludicrous and considered it foolishness. However, both Jews and Greeks were called by God. The same gospel that scandalized the one and was considered foolishness by the other became the power and wisdom of God for those who were called.

It is the same situation today when we preach the word of the cross. V. 18. Religious people are scandalized, and unbelievers consider it foolishness. But those among them who are called open up their hearts and experience God’s power and wisdom.
