The Food Which the Son of Man Will Give You
“Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him.” John 6:27.
Jesus Himself exhorts us not to labor for the food which perishes. When we observe people in general, including religious people, we notice that they labor exclusively for the food which perishes—but what an empty life they live! They do not bother with the food which, if they eat it, will give them everlasting life. Satan has thoroughly confused people and turned everything upside down. They work for their body and its well-being, but they neglect the most important thing, their spirit. Of course we need to have earthly work, but it should not capture our mind and our interest. We work because we know it is God’s will for us to do righteousness where we are, but other than that, our earthly work does not interest us.
Only Christ can give us the food that endures to everlasting life. In verse 55, we read what this food is: “For My flesh is food indeed, and My blood is drink indeed.” This is the food for which we should labor, and in which we should be interested, for we have no life in us without eating this flesh and drinking this blood. Eating Christ’s flesh and drinking His blood are symbolically demonstrated so blessedly in the Last Supper about which we read: “For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes.” 1 Cor. 11:26. According to this word we realize that to labor for the food that endures to everlasting life is to proclaim the death of Christ. This is a glorious labor in this world! We eat the flesh of Christ by presenting our body as Christ did when He said, “A body You have prepared for Me.” Heb. 10:5. We drink His blood by having fellowship in His sufferings which are a direct result of having a body that is presented to obey to obey all God’s will. When we deny our will in favor of doing God’s will, we proclaim the death of Christ. Then we also have life—everlasting life—within ourselves.
“For as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself.” John 5:26. This was Christ’s experience because His food was to do Hs Father’s will. In the same way it is granted to us to have life in ourselves when we proclaim the death of Christ; i.e., not as a doctrine, but in life and reality. Christ came with this food and drink to give to the hungry and the thirsty. The Father has set His seal on this food. It is approved by Him; it endures to everlasting life. Thanks be to God for all eternity for this flesh and this blood! It is truly food and drink!
