The Prophetic Word

2 Peter 1:16-21

When we read about Jesus’ power and His return and the glory that will then be, one could think that these things are cunningly devised fables. However, Peter says that they are not, for he was an eyewitness of Jesus’ glory when He was transfigured on the mountain; nevertheless, the prophetic word that shines as a light in a dark place is made more sure, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in our hearts.

There are many prophetic words concerning Israel and that the Jewish people will be gathered in their land and that the desert will be like a well-watered garden. Even so, it was seemingly dark for almost two thousand years. Yet the prophetic word has, during all these years, shone like a star onto a dark place. The believers have looked at it and believed and rejoiced. Only now is it beginning to dawn, and the morning star is shining clearly. The events we experience in this area surpass the most cunningly devised fables.

When we read the gospel about what Jesus can and will do for a sinner, this also surpasses the most cunningly devised fables. When it concerns the life of a man, it is utter darkness. Read Romans 3:10-18. But the gospel promises to make these people who are in darkness into one just as Jesus and the Father are one. They shall even partake of divine nature. All these promises are prophetic words that concern those who seek God wholeheartedly. Blessed is he who begins to pay heed to the prophetic word and believes that it concerns him. Every promise will be like the sun at noonday in his life.

After Joshua had led the people of Israel into the land he said to them: “Not a word failed of any good thing which the Lord had spoken to the house of Israel. All came to pass.” Josh. 21:45.

But these good words were meaningless to those who doubted and died in the wilderness. All the harmful things that God had foretold came to pass in their lives. Josh. 23:15. Joshua and Caleb became men through whom God could prove His goodness and glory. Throughout all these years God has had such God-fearing men and women through whom He could prove His glory to people.

May God in our days find us to be such men and women of faith who pay heed to the prophetic word regardless of how dark the place on which it shines may be, and irrespective of unbelief and contradiction. May each promise become noonday in our life so that not one word will fall to the ground. May we be true witnesses of this in our day.
