The Difference Between Good and Evil
Everyone likely knows that there is a difference, that good is better than evil. But who knows fully how much better it is? You would have to have all the light that is in God in order to understand it.
We can justifiably say that the greater we see the difference, the more light of life we have, the more we are saved, the further we have progressed on the way.
In other words, it is a kind of gauge of God’s work in our inner man. In the beginning, we see relatively little difference. Subsequently, the difference increases in our eyes, and after having walked faithfully on the way for a longer period of time, we see a rather large difference but not as great as it is by far.
For example, the various brothers and sisters have extremely differing notions about how rewarding it is to be generous as opposed to being miserly, closefisted, sparing, and forgetting to share with the others—all according to how much or how little they are saved.
If we really knew the great value of God seeing His virtues in us and how inexpressibly much we and others profit from His virtues, we would increase in speed and in seriousness when it comes to seeking them and practicing them!
Patience is not a little bit better than impatience. Truth is not a little bit better than lying. Laying down your life is not a little bit better than drawing back. Keeping something in confidence is not just a little bit better than broadcasting it. Making your charitable deeds known is not just a little bit worse than hiding them. Seeking your own honor is not just a little bit worse than seeking God’s honor. Being agreeable is not just a little bit better than being obstinate, etc.
On the contrary! It is not even sufficient to say that it is much better (or worse)! There is simply no comparison.
God strengthen us mightily to everything that is good and lovely and profitable, to every divine virtue now while we still have a choice, while there is still time.
