Opportunity for the Flesh

“For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.” Gal. 5:13.

The flesh is always on the lookout for an opportunity to be satisfied; and when those who are in the flesh can find support in God’s Word, it is not easy to keep them in their place. It is written that God does not deny any good to those who love Him. This word is used by many to give their flesh an opportunity. Paul’s word, “I can do all things,” is also a good support for the flesh. The things that are profitable are, of course, according to the light an individual has. “If anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father” is also a beloved word of refuge for those who are in the flesh when they are exhorted not to sin. They also find good comfort in Paul when he says, “For the good that I will to do, I do not do.” Many people also cling to the comfort they can find through David’s fall.

“Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.” Rom. 8:33-24. This is a favorite word of refuge for those who feel judged by the works of their flesh. Jesus said on a given occasion, “Take heed how you hear.” We, too, have to say, “Take heed how you read so that you do not use it as an opportunity for the flesh.” Those who are in the flesh—in the world—can never be spiritual. They have to be hedged in by commandments. Col. 2:20. Only someone who hates his own life according to the flesh can be spiritual—he crucifies his flesh with its passions and desires. Only they belong to Christ. Gal. 5:24. Only they can comprehend the Scriptures correctly. The others seek an opportunity for the flesh and are deceived.
