God’s Word

Hebrews 4:12. Only the living Word of God is able to penetrate into the secrets of men’s hearts and perform its blessed work. The Word of God is like a fire and a hammer. It alone can melt and break the hardness and stiffness in hearts.

For this reason Paul exhorts us to let God’s Word dwell richly among us. Our testimonies at conferences and meetings should be related to a Word of God that has become living for us. Perhaps we have read and heard about patience many times, but suddenly one day, a certain situation arises in which everything regarding patience becomes remarkably living for us. It pierces deep into our heart and fills us with peace and joy as we accept it. Then when we share it in a meeting or talk to a brother or sister about it, it is living and powerful—it pierces through, right into their hearts. It is truly food; it is a seed with the capacity to germinate. Then patience also begins to grow, first in the one and then in another.

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” John 1:1. It is God Himself who is born in us by the word of truth. We become eternal beings with an unshakable joy and peace. We reflect the glory of God, which radiates from us in the form of patience, truth, righteousness, love, gentleness, generosity, goodness, etc.

Peter said, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.” May the eternal words of life also have such a drawing power in our lives that we have no one and nothing else to which we can turn.

“For I have given to them the words which You have given Me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came forth from You; and they have believed that You sent Me.” John 17:8.

Jesus received living words from His heavenly Father, and He lived them in His daily life. Then He gave them to His disciples who also lived them. The disciples then proclaimed them to the people, and we read that the Word of God grew and multiplied, and the number of disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests were obedient to the faith. Acts 6:7; 12:24.

Only the living Word of God can lead people to the obedience of faith. The apostles were not interested in only having people listen to them speak; they wanted to bring them to the obedience of faith.

Jesus said to the Jews, “But you do not have His word abiding in you.” John 5:38. How blessed it is to have God’s Word abiding in you in all of life’s circumstances. Then you are like Mount Zion that cannot be moved; you are never discouraged or downhearted.

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Ps. 119:105. It is impossible to find the way if we do not have this light before us, and in life’s difficulties we will stumble around in darkness with unrest and fear in our hearts. Yet how peaceful and safe it is to have this lamp. The living Word of God casts light into every possible difficulty. We find the path through everything, and we can always give thanks for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Eph. 5:20.

We should not be surprised when we read, “I rejoice at Your word as one who finds great treasure.” Ps. 119:162. We possess no greater treasure or riches than the words of God that have become our life. Everything else will burn up.

Paul did not come with excellence of speech; he simply proclaimed the simple, pure word of the cross. He was with them in weakness, in fear, and in much trembling, so that he could speak the right words at the right time. He knew that only the living words that had been given to him by the Holy Spirit could accomplish anything in people’s lives. These words burned in his own heart, and they began to burn in the others’ hearts as well. Let all excellence of speech disappear. May we share the living Word of God with each other. It is by these words of truth that we are born to be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures. Jas. 1:18.
