He Who Believes in Me Shall Never Thirst

John 6:35

This is a wonderful expression for the exalted life that Jesus Christ has called us to live in this world. Whom does He call to live this precious life? All those who come to Him and believe in Him. See John 6:35.

Never thirsting is the same as never lacking anything, never being discontented with anything, always being satisfied, always being at rest in God in all circumstances. Never any discord! Always victorious, even if everything is upside down; yes, even if all the demons are let loose.

By reflecting on the matter more carefully, we clearly and unmistakably realize that it can truly be said that all sin is the result of not being content with what you have and are: you thirst for something else; you lack something and are dissatisfied with something or someone. Just think about this! We are not at rest within and are therefore drawn and driven to sin, in thought, word, and deed. Try to think of one single sin that does not result from this restlessness! You cannot. It is impossible.

When we think about it, we can get an idea of the depth and breadth of what Jesus means when He says, “Never thirst.” God be praised for such a thorough salvation!

There is hardly anything more characteristic of a sinner, whether he is worldly or religious, than this: always discontented and dissatisfied with one thing or another or with one person or another. Their slogan is almost: Everything is wrong! This should be different and that should be different; this is wrong and that is wrong; this is not suitable and that is not suitable; this can’t go on and that can’t go on.

But when you have forever quenched your thirst in Jesus Christ, it becomes like this: This is good and that is fine; thanks and praise; thanks and praise, everything is fine and this is enough; this is all too much and this is all too good; it is all too good. Thanks and praise and everlasting honor!

Only then can you fulfill this exhortation: “In everything give thanks.” Otherwise you know only that you ought to do it, but you are not able to perform it because deep inside you are full of dissatisfaction.

How unspeakably good it must be for everyone who comes to a living faith in Christ so that he will never thirst.
