Urim and Thummim

The one who had the Urim and the Thummim could inquire of the Lord, and the people could inquire of the Lord by him. Ex. 28:30.

Urim and Thummim means Lights and Perfections, and those who have it can also inquire of the Lord in our days. These are the kinds of men that are lacking in these days. People are like sheep that have gone astray without a shepherd. They have ended up in all kinds of difficulties because of sin. Many of them are searching to see if they can find one by whom they can inquire of the Lord. “If there is a messenger for him, a mediator, one among a thousand, to show man the right way . . . .” Job 33:23.

What is the requirement for being such a messenger? We read in Deuteronomy 33:8-11: “Let Your Thummim and Your Urim be with Your holy one . . . who says of his father and mother, ‘I have not seen them,’ nor did he acknowledge his brothers, or know his own children; for they have observed Your word and kept Your covenant. They shall teach Jacob Your judgments, and Israel Your law.”

Where are you going to find a man who is this interested in God’s Word? This is what is required in order to receive light and perfection. This is in agreement with Jesus’ words that no one can be His disciple unless he hates father and mother, sister and brother, etc.

Jesus is that Holy One to whom belong the Urim and the Thummim. He was called High Priest according to the order of Melchizedek. What was so special about Melchizedek? He was without father, without mother, and without genealogy. Heb. 7:3. If Jesus had come down from heaven like an angel, it would be easy to say this about Him, but every high priest is taken from among men and appointed for men in things pertaining to God—someone who can have compassion on those who are ignorant and going astray, since he himself is also beset by weakness. And no man takes this honor to himself, but he who is called by God. Even Christ did not take this honor to Himself. Heb. 5. He had to be faithful, learn obedience, and finish His course before God could call Him High Priest according to the order of Melchizedek. Therefore Jesus had to partake of flesh and blood like the children and become like His brethren in all things. Heb. 2:14-18. He did not attain to being High Priest according to the order of Melchizedek without pain. He said to His mother, “Woman, what does your concern have to do with Me?” And when His mother and His brothers wanted to gain His attention, He said, “For whoever does the will of God is My brother and My sister and mother.” John 2:4; Mark 3:34-35. He who in the days of His flesh offered up prayers and supplications with vehement cries and tears to Him who was able to save Him from death knows what it means that the way is narrow, which is why He is also able to aid us when we go on that way. For He had to be taken from among men and be appointed for men. He who lives according to the flesh shall die, but Jesus pressed into God in the days of His flesh so that He was saved from death. He was not indebted to the flesh—whether it was His own or that of His relatives—therefore He possessed light and perfection.

Have you truly become His disciple? Are you so apprehended of God’s Word and His commandments that you are not influenced by any flesh? Then you are a man with Urim and Thummim. You shall instruct men concerning the right way and save them from death. The Lord will bless your strength and let the works of your hands please Him. You who do not seek your own or the advantage of your relatives but see only God’s Word and His laws (Neh. 13:4-9), the Lord will crush the loins of those who rise up against you and who hate you, that they rise no more. Deut. 33:11. Be bold, you who are a sacrificial priest of God. Rom. 15:16. You have not taken this honor to yourself, but God who has called you has given it to you. Be faithful until death and you will gain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Thess. 2:14.
