Piercing Themselves Through with Many Sorrows
The person who wants to be rich in this world, who loves money, also the person who loves honor, pierces himself through with many sorrows. Every time their deals and their great, planned businesses ventures fail, they are pierced through anew. Every time they are dishonored instead of honored (for which they had hoped), they are pierced through again.
Not only in these cases, but in every other great or and small instance, when a person hopes for anything other than God or for anything at all outside of God, he is disappointed when it does not go according to his wishes. This is how people pierce themselves through with many sorrows.
Every disappointment is the result of having hoped for something, with a strong self-will, outside of God. The person whose hope is in Him is never disappointed. All these disappointments and unnecessary sufferings and sorrows are eliminated if I do not hope and wish for and do not want and do not covet anything outside of God. Glory to God!
