Remember Lot’s Wife!
“But on the day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all. Even so will it be in the day when the Son of Man is revealed.” Read Luke 21:28-32.
This scripture tells us that the tribulations will come only after Jesus has taken away those that belong to Him. We also read that in those days people will be much occupied with earthly things. They will plant and build, eat and drink, buy and sell, marry and be given in marriage. They will not be bad times when it concerns these matters. However, Paul says that it will be difficult to find godliness. They will have a form of godliness in the midst of living in all kinds of sins, for they will deny its power. 2 Tim. 3:1-5.
Remember Lot’s wife! She was among those who escaped the destruction, but she was not free from the things that were being destroyed. She looked back. This teaches us that it is a matter of the heart. A form of godliness cannot save us.
When a person is on his deathbed, he begins to look back. Quite often there are many things he would like to make right: something he should have paid or for which he should have asked for forgiveness. It is good if he gets time to do it; but when the Son of Man is revealed, there will be no time for such things; then those who are ready will go with Him. Therefore the apostle says that we should fear lest we stay behind on the way, and that we should be diligent to enter that rest.
All those who were twenty years and older stayed behind on the way from Egypt to Canaan. Only Joshua and Caleb entered the land. The others had not forgotten the fleshpots, the leeks, and the garlic in Egypt. They looked back every time they were tested. They had left Egypt because they were tired of being slaves, but they also thought that there was something good in Egypt, and they were never free from it in their hearts. This is also how many Christians have it. They were tired of the consequences of sin and have left the world so that they are no longer enslaved by the world. They do not love the world, but multitudes of Christians love the things in the world. 1 John 2:15. There are many things there that are not a burden to them anymore, but now they can enjoy them and have a good time with them and receive honor for them. Oh, how their hearts are attached to them. They always look back. They are staying behind on the way.
“And God rested on the seventh day from all His works . . . .” Heb. 4:4. “For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His. Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest . . . .” Vs. 10-11. We must be diligent to enter that rest from our works. If we want to have rest, then we must perform our works according to the light we have, and we must be diligent to do that. You will not rest if you have not walked according to your conscience. You will always look back. Remember Lot’s wife! Why should such things hinder you on the Day when Jesus wants to save you from the things that will come to pass? Luke 21:36.
Can you have rest in your relationship with your parents, your spouse, your siblings, the authorities, and in your relationship at your place of employment, etc.? If you cannot, you will most certainly look back. Therefore be diligent to enter that rest while you still have grace over you. “But all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.” Heb. 4:13.
It is God’s great blessing that we have received light over these things. Let us therefore be so humble that we can put everything in order so that we will not be put to shame.
