Walls of Division—Enmities

Ephesians 2

All dividing walls, enmities, have been broken down in Jesus Christ. In Jesus’ time there was, as there still exists to some degree in these days, a high wall between Jews and Gentiles (all the other nations). This dividing wall, as well as every other such dividing wall, has been completely destroyed in Christ Jesus. When we, by faith, become partakers of the death of Christ, all these walls of separation in our life are torn down, and we are, as the Scriptures say, made into one—not just in theory, but in reality.

When the walls of division remain, this only goes to show in the most unmistakable way that our personal crucifixion with Christ is only a theory. It is not genuine; it is not true; it has not been realized through a living faith.

In Jesus’ days the great dividing wall was mainly between Jews and Gentiles. In our days there are many walls between God’s people. This proves that faith in the finished work is held in low esteem. Even a willingness to become one is in short supply; they do not want to become one. People even get angry when that is the topic of conversation! They think it is impossible! Of course it is impossible if you do not want to, and it is impossible if you do not believe. But it can happen if we are willing and if we believe with all of our heart. And what is even better is that it does happen!

People do not want to admit that these dividing walls are enmities. Yet this is precisely what they are! The fact people smile and nod at brothers on the other side of various walls does not in any way prove that they love each other. Unconverted people can also manage that. On the contrary, the walls prove that they do not love each other. Their true condition is laid bare when they become better acquainted with each other!

The fact that they break God’s commandment by recognizing and maintaining the denominational system does not demonstrate that they love God because those who love God, keep His commandments. Denominations are of the devil. They are manifest works of the flesh; they are noticeable; they are a sin that cries out to high heaven.
