One Hope
“There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling . . . .” Eph. 4:4.
“Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your calling and election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble; for so an entrance will be supplied to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” 2 Pet. 1:10-11.
In Christ we all have a holy calling and election. We have one hope in this one election. Unfortunately, there are very few who find their way to this one calling and this one hope. Most people are very indecisive and uncertain throughout their life. In their carnal fantasies they have thousands of hopes, and their precious time of life has passed away before all these hopes have failed. All these hopes create a multitude of sorrows and anxieties, disappointments, and vexations as each one of them come to nothing; and as a result people become bitter and hard in their minds.
It is important for Satan to keep people’s minds and thoughts busy with vain dreams about one thing or another that appears so great and shiny, until he has swallowed up all of the time of their life. In the end they lie there poor and bare of everything and stare into the darkness of perdition, while the devil rejoices over his prey.
Why wait until you are on your deathbed to have all your hopes shattered? In the death of Christ you can destroy all these hopes in your childhood or in your youth, so that you avoid having to regard your life as a failure. “Lay your gold in the dust, and the gold of Ophir among the stones of the brooks. Yes, the Almighty will be your gold and your precious silver.” Job 22:24-25.
It is vital to set your sights on your holy calling in Jesus Christ in your early youth and only see one hope in this calling. This hope is an anchor for your soul, which is firm and sure and reaches right behind the veil. Heb. 6:19.
If we are firmly anchored in this one hope, we will have a steady and correct course throughout our life, and we can have a blessed rest and joy, which will give us the perfect assurance that we will not be disappointed in this hope.
