He Will Never Thirst

John 4:10-15

People usually regard this word, as well as the other words, superficially. This word is usually applied to sinners and is interpreted as meaning the forgiveness of sins. People do dwell on the fact that then you can have your thirst quenched, but not in connection with this powerful, true, and glorious promise that thereby you will never thirst again!!! Jesus has living water to give that has such a tremendous effect! Jesus is not speaking about physical thirst. The woman had misunderstood this. However, we understand that it is the thirst of our heart, the thirst of our spirit that is indicated here.

Being thirsty in this instance is the same as being dissatisfied, displeased with, and lacking something, so that I do not “feel well” until I lay hold of that for which I have such an intense longing in this world. I thirst for something that is outside of God.

What is it that people thirst for outside of God? They thirst for the honor of man, their rights in this world, being treated well, being received well, getting their own will through, advancement, making a good appearance, having nice and pretty and grand accommodations, having a boyfriend or girlfriend or a marriage partner, avoiding sufferings, etc.

It is possible to have all this thirst quenched once and for all—this thirst that troubles and bothers people, and which leads them out into all kinds of sin. It is possible to drink sufficiently, always, and forever!!!

This gives rise to this serious question: Seeing that this living water has such tremendous consequences, who then has really drunk this water?! Your behavior will show it! The restlessness of the thirsting person will cease. The person who is thirsty has to have something to drink. There is no end to this constant unrest, to everything a person “has to do”! The one who has quenched his thirst with living water thirsts no more for anything at all in this world. He is always at rest in his inner man; he is always thankful; he is always content and lacks nothing at all! Absolutely everything is good enough; it is just fine; it is nice enough, sufficiently grand, and acceptable; yes, even more than enough!!!

Jesus spoke so aptly to the woman by the well about all other waters: “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again.” Isn’t that true? People drink and drink but are never satisfied! Something is always wrong!

Just imagine that it is really possible to quench your thirst for everything that is in the world! This water is incomparable!!!

Now it is important to say what the woman said: “Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw.” What a glorious message this is! The glad tidings! You do not have to be thirsty anymore!

And what is even better: This living water becomes a fountain in our inner being, a fountain from which living water flows!

The glory of eternal life has quenched our thirst to the extent that there is no room for any other thirst. All other thirst dies out.

For example, when young sisters forsake God and the church in order to get a husband, it is powerful evidence that they have not quenched their thirst with living water. When someone feels insulted, gets offended, is jealous, envious, argumentative and anxious, complains and whines, etc., it is obvious to everyone that he has not quenched his thirst forever!

Dear soul, drink as never before! Drink, and let others drink!
