The Seven Spirits of God
Just as it is written about the Father and the Son being two different persons, and about both of them that they are God, so it is also written that God is one; and so also these seven spirits of God are one—namely, the Holy Spirit. All seven spirits have this in common: they are holy spirits in contrast to other spirit powers, in contrast to the spiritual hosts of wickedness in heavenly places.
The seven living creatures that were full of eyes and were therefore well equipped to see, saw nothing else in the Lord except holiness. Therefore they did not rest day or night, saying, “Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty . . . !” Rev. 4:8.
The Holy Spirit—the seven holy spirits of God—are in and proceed from the holy God. By meditating on this, we will come to a clear understanding of the way by which we can have these seven spirits of God dwelling and ruling in our inner man! We find a particularly apt word in 1 Peter 1:15 and 16: “But as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, ‘Be holy, for I am holy.’”
The seven holy spirits of God take up residence in holy people. The Holy Spirit does not dwell in unholy hearts. We have ample experience of this in daily life. Anything else would be totally meaningless.
Therefore it is of vital importance to be holy, to be cleansed, to be purified, to be separate from all uncleanness so that there will be a chasm between our holy hearts and all the unholy conduct of the world, keeping ourselves undefiled from the prevailing spirit of the times.
Then the seven spirits of God will be able to fill our hearts and minds! Then we will have seven eyes with which to see so that we can recognize all the dangers and snares and deceptions of the world and can always separate the noble from the ignoble and discern between what is holy and unholy, between the wisdom and understanding that is from below and the wisdom and understanding that is from above, etc.
Then we will also possess tremendous power in our inner man, symbolized by the seven horns. The Lamb with the seven horns that was so invincible in Christ will also prove to be invincible in God’s saints, even when their outward power is completely crushed according to God’s will.
Glory to God! Therefore the watchword is: seven holy eyes and seven holy horns in a holy heart! Amen.
