I Lack Nothing

I Lack Nothing

“The Lord is my shepherd; I lack nothing.” Ps. 23:1. David could say that, and all those who truly have Jesus as their shepherd can also say it. They are deeply thankful for Jesus’ leading in their lives. They have to say, “I have been blessed with far more than I have understood to pray for.” They possess a peace and happiness that surpasses all understanding. All those who cannot confess this seek the things of this world and do their own will. The more a person seeks after the things of this world, the more he lacks; but those who seek God’s kingdom first lack nothing.

Jesus was the happiest Man who ever lived on earth, and those who have received Him as their shepherd are the happiest people. You will never hear that they are lacking anything. “Yes,” you say, “but didn’t Jesus care and weep the most?” Yes, that is true. He wept over those people who were like sheep without a shepherd. He wept over Jerusalem because she did not understand the time of her visitation, and not because He lacked anything. On the contrary, it is written that He was anointed with the oil of gladness above His companions. Heb. 1:9. Even when He bore the cross and the women wept over Him, He said that they should not weep over Him! He could have said it with the following words: “I lack nothing; weep over yourselves and your children.”

One of the fruits of the Spirit is joy. Gal. 5:22. We can rest assured that Jesus possessed a fullness of the fruits of the Spirit, including joy. “Yes,” you say, “but it is written, ‘Blessed are the poor in spirit . . . . Blessed are those who mourn.” Yes, it says that they are blessed, and they are the most blessed people that can be found because they are willing to be led by their shepherd. In the world they will have tribulation, but in their shepherd they have peace, and they are bold because He has overcome the world. John 16:33. Because of their faith they experience how their Shepherd liberates them. The various trials result in pure joy for them. Jas. 1:2; 1 Pet. 1:6. They are poor in spirit and dissatisfied with themselves, but not with the circumstances in which they find themselves. They can say, “The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; I lack nothing.”

All those who murmur and complain over their lot in life are walking according to their own lusts. Jude 16.
