Far From It!

Far From It!

“What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not!1 How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?” Rom. 6:1-2.

“What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace! Far from it!” V. 15.

This is truly a forthright and straightforward answer! It is made truly living to us when we stop and ask: “How far?” Take paper and pencil and draw a horizontal long line. Let it indicate committing sin when you are on the left side of the line and let the right side of the line indicate doing righteousness or overcoming sin.

The intention is that you never end up on the left side of the line. You can be on the line, but never go over to the left side. Not only that, but you should be far from it, at the far end of the right side, far away from the line. How far? Several millimeters, centimeters, decimeters, meters, kilometers, miles???

Paul was a wise man. We can assume that in all probability he did not use uninhibited, inflated words. I think that “far from it” twice in a row and with exclamation marks following, in all probability indicates several miles. Have a look at your piece of paper now, and you will be strengthened in faith.
