Pentecostals Have a Corrupted Soul

This is what T.B. Barratt1 says in Lærum’s recently published book. He says that they have a corrupted soul and a corrupted body, which is often a hindrance to the good desires and actions of a cleansed spirit.

Well, I believe it! I think I have noticed it! That was really some acknowledgment. I wish you all the best with it! You seem to think that this is a nicer name for it? This, as I think it is called in recipe books, is the same thing done differently. We call this corrupted soul—all mistakes and lacks, flaws, imperfections, and weaknesses—we simply call it sin. If we know about it beforehand, it is called works of the flesh; (Gal. 5:19-21) and if we do not know about it beforehand, it is called deeds of the body. Rom. 8:13.

Dear brothers, in this we heartily agree that you have a corrupted soul. I say “Yea and Amen” to that! To be sure, it is quite corrupted! This is the very thing that Paul and we express with the following words: “O wretched man that I am!” We think it is wretched that this corrupted soul and this corrupted body is often a hindrance to the good desires and deeds of the cleansed spirit! But it is not hopeless! Not at all! God’s sharp words of truth that cover all possible areas pierce (because we love it and receive it by faith) to the division of soul and spirit, until the soul is poured out, until death enters in, point after point. Heb. 4:12. Thus the hindrances of the corrupted soul become less and less.

It is our sincere desire to get at this corrupted soul, and we also succeed in doing so by God’s grace. But perhaps you do not have such a lively interest in this subject? Perhaps you are not succeeding in it?

Besides, the truth is that the majority of God’s children have most certainly not put off the old man. Most of them do not have victory over common sins. This is an obvious truth, and trying to lie about it is pointless. It is difficult to find even one who has complete victory!

There is enough of theories and talk! The reality is worse! Examine yourself!
