From the Top of Mount Pisgah

Just before his death, Moses went up to the top of Mount Pisgah. There the Lord showed him the Promised Land. He could see it with his eyes, but he was not allowed to enter in.

We can say that even in our days there are many people who come no further than the top of Mount Pisgah. They are born of water and the Spirit; they can see the kingdom of God, but they do not enter in. They rejoice at the meetings when God-fearing brothers show them the “promised land” and speak of all its glories; about how they themselves overcome all its enemies and take the good things of the land by force (for example, “large clusters of grapes”). Yes, these listeners rejoice greatly and even imagine that they are in the “promised land” themselves. But during the day they walk in the desert sand, waiting for the next meeting where they can get a glimpse of this “promised land” from the top of Mount Pisgah again. This is how it goes all year round. It is truly an empty existence.

We are not helped if all we do is rejoice in the doctrines, but are not diligent to do them. Let us enter the land ourselves, drive out the enemies, and possess the land. Then we will also come bearing “clusters of grapes” and other good things that we have captured by overcoming, and we can share them with our brothers and sisters. Then we will not go around dejected, expecting to be comforted and blessed by the others, but we will have something to give and can be a blessing. It is far more blessed when we have something to give, than when we receive.
