The Centurion’s Faith

Matthew 8:5-10

It is so blessed to read about the centurion’s strong faith, and the way in which he understood Jesus. He understood Him in relation to his own life. He was a centurion who had many subordinates under him; they carried out his least commands. He also knew the reason for his great power and authority. He had displayed the greatest obedience and faithfulness in all his service; he also had carried out his superior’s least commands with the greatest care. Therefore he was entrusted with more and more, and now he had great power and authority as a centurion. When his servant became paralyzed, he met Jesus and he recognized Him for what He was—a spiritual prince. Therefore, he spoke to Him with great reverence and said that he was not worthy that He should come under his roof. “But only speak a word, and my servant will be healed.” He knew that Jesus had many servants; He did not have to do it Himself, He could simply give a command with one word, and it would be done. The centurion knew that even the spirits were subject to Him. Jesus had not found such faith and understanding, not even in Israel!

Jesus had likewise received great power and authority through His obedience to His Father. He did not say a single word unless it was given to Him from above. Therefore the government was placed on His shoulders, and He received unlimited power. Now He has become the author of eternal salvation to all those who obey Him. Consequently, only obedience to the faith can lead us to spiritual greatness. Someone who is careless in his life will never rule together with Jesus. He cannot be a pillar in God’s temple in whom someone can trust.

He cannot speak God’s Word with power and authority, nor can he be used to carry out any work in God’s vineyard. He is and remains a field. On the other hand, the words of an obedient person have authority. He gains respect by his life. He has intimate fellowship with the Lord and is capable of bearing burdens. Out of his life flow rivers of living water. Therefore Paul could say, “When I come to you, I shall come in the fullness of the blessing of the gospel of Christ.” Rom. 15:29.
