A Great Mistake
“God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” When people want to show goodness to their fellowmen—help them, comfort, visit, and give them something—they commit a great error by wanting to show the same care to the proud as to the humble. God does not do that; therefore we should not do it either. We should absolutely not show any sympathy for those who are proud, but should leave such hard and stiff people to their fate. Perhaps it might chasten them to humble themselves so it can eventually go well with them. It is better to show four times as much goodness to those who are humble. To be merciful to the proud is an outright transgression of the law. Transgressing the law is sin!
