Those Who Come in See the Light

“No one, when he has lit a lamp, puts it in a secret place or under a basket, but on a lampstand, that those who come in may see the light.” Luke 11:33.

The lamp has now been lit in our hearts, and everyone who enters there will see its light. “He who receives you receives Me,” Jesus said. In other words, it is impossible to see the light that God has given us unless a person receives us. They must come inside, because the vessel itself does not give light. The excellence of the power is inside the earthen vessels, so that our boasting is excluded. The life is in the light, but the walls of the earthen vessel keep the light from shining through. So the body is a covering that hides the light and life, because over everything glorious there is a covering. People looked at Jesus’ outward appearance and said, “Is this not the son of Joseph the carpenter?” Peter, on the other hand, was able to see inside the veil when he said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” “Flesh and blood has not revealed this to you,” Jesus said to him. Flesh and blood look at the outside, but God looks at what is within. Cleanse the inside; then indeed all things are clean to you.

“The lamp of the body is the eye.” Verse 34. When our understanding has been enlightened and the light shines clearly within, the eye, which is the lamp of the body, will serve the inner light, watching over the body to see that it is preserved in holiness and purity.

“Therefore take heed that the light which is in you is not darkness.” Verse 35. When the light that a person believes he has is really darkness, the light of the eye will serve a darkened understanding, and the body has no guarantee of protection. Only in the light from above can our body, soul and spirit be preserved undefiled and holy.

The spiritual eye watches over the body to see if anything having to do with sin in the flesh is still clinging to the body. If it finds anything, it must be removed by self-acknowledgment and judgment.

“If then your whole body is full of light, having no part dark, the whole body will be full of light, as when the bright shining of a lamp gives you light.” Verse 36.

When you reflect on your past and find that you are not bound by any of your former sins and can say like Paul, “I know of nothing against myself,” then your body is light, just as when a light shines brightly on you. There are no dark spots in this light, and if any such spot were to be found, it would have to be cleansed in the blood of Christ by acknowledgment and confession.

When we are pure within, the outside is also pure. When our motives are pure, our works also become pure, even though they are not perfect.
