Some Brief Conclusions on the Benefits and Usefulness of the Holy Cross

The noble cross is the narrow and strait way leading to life, a divine rod of chastisement that awakens us from the sleep of sin, and is a fatherly correction; a morning star that goes before the sun of consolation; a sign of grace resembling the rainbow. It makes us conformed to Christ; it puts off from us the works of darkness and clothes us with the armour of light. It is a balsamic fruit, an incorruptible myrrh, life-giving herb, a wholesome drink, a blessed cup, a testing of faith, the edification of our neighbour, the midwife of love, the companion of hope, the forerunner of grace, the healing of the soul A safeguard against sin. It extinguishes and subdues the life of the flesh; it awakens and kindles the life of the spirit. It transforms the earthly mind and teaches us to forsake and renounce the world. It makes us friends of God; it increases within us the heavenly gifts; it restrains pride; it gives birth to and nurtures humility; it teaches patience; it renews the spirit; it strengthens the virtues; it disciplines and mortifies the body; it refreshes the mind; it produces gentleness; it is the mother of wisdom; it cultivates meekness; it encourages and awakens prayer; it guards and preserves chastity; it brings with it a good conscience. It is the wealth of inward joy; it is a carbuncle among the ornaments of the saints; it is the believers’ radiant precious stone; it is a fragrant rose of paradise; it is the crown of martyrs and witnesses of blood;, the honour and adornment of the elect.
