Poem by Aksel Smith

Life’s deep myst’ry—hid reflections,
Break their way into my mind.
May my longing not be hindered;
Let the hidden light there shine.

Bind my thinking to Thy mystery,
Till it clarity doth bring.
May my longing break through barriers
After winter, comes the spring.

Art Thou far from me, Redeemer?
Tarry not, O hear my cry.
Even Nature giveth utterance—
Shows the way here by its sigh.

Shall I satisfy my yearnings
Where, through suff’rings, blood doth flow?
Through the cross, O shall my longings
Lead me where Thy steps did go?

Life’s great myst’ry, lifelines follow
Where the Man of suff’ring went.
Blazed a way through death to heaven,
Wrought the longed-for hope’s intent.

In the mirror, thoughts reflected—
Myst’ry solved here for my soul.
Inner longing’s inner battle
Breaks down barriers to the goal.

Deep within my soul, hope’s anchor
Fast and sure, within doth rest
As I firmly grip its chain-links;
Heaven is my portion blest.

Now my tongue can sing with praises
Through my suff’rings on life’s way.
Hope’s firm anchor with its chain-links
Holds me up from day to day.

From the cup of comfort drinking
While I’m in this foreign land—
Until all of life’s deep myst’ries
Are revealed on heaven’s strand.
