Eve

As a type of the Bride of the Lamb

1 Corinthians 1:30. But of Him you are in Christ Jesus. (John 19:34-35; Genesis 2:21-23).

In the wonderful verses of Genesis 2:21-23 we encounter 3 truths.

1) God took a rib from Adams side.

So, the bride was taken out of Him. We all have an eternal story behind us. God has chosen us in Him before the foundation of the world, and He has been preoccupied with how He could make us happy and blessed. (Ephesians 1:4). Our conversion is no coincidence, but determined by the Father from eternity. We are not just “found” but chosen in the Son before the foundation of the world. O, when our calling and election is revealed to us, we have a royal spirit that leads us to holy worship. Through the realization of our eternal story, the bridal love is awakened in us, and it becomes our longing to devote ourselves completely to the Lamb. In John 17, we find these words occur seven times: “those whom You have given Me.” John, the disciple who lay on Jesus’ breast, was the only one who understood the deep meaning of these words, the only one who recorded them, and he was the only one who had the strength to go with Jesus to the cross.

The first Christians had a deep realization of their belonging to Christ, hence the strong spirit of joy that carried them victoriously through martyrdom.

The cross is the place of our birth; we have the same flesh and blood as Jesus and are born of water and the Spirit. Our fellowship with Him is a fellowship of the cross.

2. God made a woman from Adam’s rib.

The Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, . . . He took one of Adam’s ribs, and He built it into a woman. And the second Adam had to fall into the deep sleep of death, so that the Holy Spirit could build a new creature from Him. From the rib that was of no reputation, the Holy Spirit creates a glorious bride for Christ. There is just the same difference between a new convert and a mature Christian as there is between a “rib” and a “woman.” For Him to form us in this way, He must be our deepest longing, and we must be gripped by Him. 2 Corinthians 3:18. For Paul the goal was always to be conformed to the image of the Son. (Philippians 3:13-14). We are not saved just to go to heaven. God has a completely different purpose for us. We must become like Him! We must not set our sights any lower. We must always be gripped by this goal. Whoever is gripped by this glorious goal will treat every minute of his life as sacred! Many of God’s children do not venture into this domain but take comfort in just being a doorkeeper in heaven. But we grieve the Spirit of God if we do not set ourselves this goal. God’s church has been very sluggish in pursuing this goal. We must strive to have an open eye for the glory of our Lord. We should have a hunger that the Spirit would rejoice in, a hunger for conformity to the Son of God.

3) God brought the woman to the man

What a moment it will be when the Spirit, after 2000 years of work, can bring the bride to meet the Lamb the first reward of His death.

We must be deeply humbled by the fact that it will soon be 2,000 years before the Spirit has achieved His goal with humanity. For His work is to make the Lamb’s wife from the lamb of men, not of souls; for Christ sits on the throne as a man. We are to be like Him as a “man.” Yes, our body also belongs to Him; therefore, it must also be put at God’s disposal. “If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him . . .” Therefore, glorify God with your body. It must come to the point where the Holy Spirit has complete dominion over our body. This body of humiliation shall be transformed into the likeness of His resurrection body. (1 John 3:2-3.)

If our vision is open to this glory, then all bonds of sin fall away. The Holy Spirit shows us the goal—to purify ourselves, just as He is pure.

Revelation 21:9: “Come, I will show you the bride, the Lamb’s wife.”
