Truth Shall Spring Out of the Earth
Pilate once asked, “What is truth?” Jesus did not answer him, and for good reason. Pilate dared to assume, as some do today, that truth would spring out of the religious high places among those most highly esteemed. However, this is not the case.
“Truth shall spring out of the earth, and righteousness shall look down from heaven.” Ps. 85:11.
Truth springs out of the lowly places, out of what is poor and despised. The great men of this world do not recognize this, but there is One above who is righteous, who looks down from heaven to uphold the truth.
The eyes of the preachers of our time are far too proud to be able to look down into the lowly places and observe the truth that springs out of the earth. The eyes of the righteous look to the lowly places, and that is why they understand the plight of those who are lowly. Those who are puffed up—who want to be something—look up to worldly prestige and religious status.
God is righteous. He looks down from heaven to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose hearts are loyal to Him.
John had no greater joy than that his children walked in truth. 3 John 4. That is to say, they walked in lowliness in what God allowed to spring out of the earth. There is a covering over everything glorious, including the truth. The work of the Spirit is to guide us into all truth. This means that by conviction He will lead us down to the lowly places where truth grows and flourishes. Those who are of a contrite heart and a broken spirit find this place easily, but those who are puffed up never find it.
“The remnant who have escaped of the house of Judah shall again take root downward, and bear fruit upward.” 2 Kings 19:30. The deeper down, the higher up. A prudent person digs deep and lays his foundation on the rock. Having laid the foundation on solid rock, he can then build higher than one whose foundation is on the sand.
You who are newly converted, do not concern yourself with trying to move up. Rather be diligent to dig deep; then God will lift you up in His time.
In our time, we see many preachers reaching great heights. But one after the other they fall from these heights because they did not dig deep from the beginning. Paul cast down arguments and every high thing that exalted itself against the knowledge of God. He could do that because he had deep roots downward.
