The Testimony of God

The Testimony of God

“He who has received His testimony has certified that God is true.” John 3:33.

When a man testifies, it is not always God’s testimony. Quite often a man speaks of things he does not understand, and frequently things are said about God which are not right. Job 42:3, 7. However, Jesus said to Nicodemus, “Most assuredly, I say to you, We speak what We know and testify what We have seen, and you do not receive Our witness.” John 3:11.

Whoever speaks in the church must speak as the Word of God. Let him speak of what he knows and testify of what he has seen—then he will speak as the Word of God. No one will be able to refute what he says, for it is the truth.

The testimony we bear within consists of the Spirit of truth (which the world cannot receive), the water and the blood. He who believes bears this testimony in himself. He who speaks the Word of God speaks on the basis of this testimony in the Holy Spirit.

A man can also speak through the prompting of the Holy Spirit to bring conviction about sin, righteousness and judgment. However, the words that follow these convicting words are not as the Word of God if the man does not bear the testimony of the water and the blood in himself. Nevertheless, such words are most commonly spoken in our days. That is also the reason these words are so weak and powerless. Even though multitudes of words are spoken, they have no significant effect. Quite often there is not a true man behind all those words—a man of whom the Spirit, the water and the blood can bear witness. People preach their own testimony about God instead of preaching God’s testimony. Consequently, their words return void. God’s Word, on the other hand, never returns void.

What a man believes or testifies about God in his own human spirit is of very little consequence. What we need are God’s testimony and God’s Word.

John testified to the Word of God and to the testimony of Jesus Christ. Rev. 1:2. We read in Revelations 20:4 about people who were beheaded for their witness to Jesus and for the Word of God.

Christ is the One who came with water and blood, and the Spirit witnesses, because the Spirit is truth. This is the testimony of Christ. Let him who speaks in the church bring this testimony. Then there will be a man behind the words—a man who bears about in his mortal body the dying of the Lord Jesus. The power of the kingdom of God will become visible, and the words will bring results.

The Spirit testifies within the heart of every man, and we can preach to people with that confidence. But it is only those who accept this testimony of the Spirit who can confirm that God is true. We need men who have proven that God is true. Let them have the ministry of the Word, because the world already has heard more than enough about men’s opinion of God.
