He Is Our Peace
Everyone wants peace. Even those who fight do so in order to get peace. The world yearns for peace but does not seek it in ways that are in harmony with a good conscience; rather, it seeks peace by deadening the conscience. It is written, “The desire of the flesh is death.” Rom. 8:6. (Norw.). In other words, it wants peace in death. Christ gives us another peace—He gives us His peace—not as the world gives. We can keep the peace of Christ by wanting the same things God wants and by obediently fulfilling the tasks He prompts us to do.
It takes a conscious act of our own will to come into God’s will. We must pull ourselves together, as the saying goes, and overcome the desire of the flesh by consciously allowing God to work in us both to will and to do. God does not take away our will; He strengthens it, so that we are able to conquer all that is in our flesh, those things which otherwise would bring us under the law of sin and death—in other words, the peace of death.
The peace of death is not eternal. You can deaden your conscience, and you can be dead in sins and transgressions so that you feel peace. Nevertheless, when you sin, what you actually are doing is heaping up for yourself wrath for the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God.
People who have come to Christ often make the great mistake of seeking a deeper peace by searching in books and literature. The peace of Christ is not found there. He is our peace. “You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me. But you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life.”
Life and peace are in Him, and He is manifested in us when our will unites with His. He begins by convincing us of the advantages of wanting the same thing He wants, and of the disadvantages of obeying the desires of the flesh. These are the only two choices we have—unless we choose to give ourselves completely over to the service of Satan and evil spirits. By making the right choices, people can now receive power by the Spirit to raise themselves up from sin and death into righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. Our very being is transformed from a lower level of existence to a higher level. These laws are universal, and every human being can take advantage of them. The blood of Christ destroys sin in the flesh.
He is our peace. This “He” is talking about a person—a life. This life, and thereby this peace, is to be manifested in our mortal flesh. He came to do the will of God. Whenever He comes into a body, He will follow the same law; that is, to do the will of God. Everyone who does God’s will has peace with God; and this peace is called the peace of Christ, because only by Him are we able to do God’s will.
Now some people will say, “What is the will of God?” The answer is: Whatever is right in front of you. It is God’s will that you abolish all unrighteousness, humble yourself, forgive and ask for forgiveness. When you are serious about obeying these fundamental aspects of the will of God, then you can think about searching out more of the will of God. However, until a person is obedient in these basics, God is inaccessible. Unrighteousness of any kind hinders peace. Get rid of unrighteousness, and peace will come by itself. To be spiritually minded is life and peace, and the Scriptures testify about His (Christ’s) life.
