How true it is that the source of all unrest of the heart is that small things are becoming great and great things are becoming small. How we need to lay hold of that which is truly great, “the eternal Father,” so that we do not lay hold of that which is less precious—that which has been created. Eternal truths and spiritual things cannot be united with anything except that which is eternal in us—with the new life, which has the cross between itself and the old life. However, the old life also wants to assert its demands in an evil as well as in a “good” way; yet it must never be given any latitude; it has to die on the cross with Christ. The temporal things are so close at hand; yet we should be so established in our spiritual state that we are keenly aware of them and make sure that the temporal, the visible things are at a distance. Our mind is not much occupied with things that are at a distance, but whatever is close at hand appears to be great. Therefore God makes us aware of spiritual things so that we may see them as great, whereas that which is carnal becomes more and more distant, with the result that even death has to come in between as a devouring abyss.
God, who is great, plants the kernel of truth into our soul as a pure and glorious treasure that will become inexhaustible riches for our mind—even our entire existence. We have this treasure in God, and not in ourselves—so we must not search for it there—for the sign of the cross is over all of our self, whereas the sunshine of glory is over everything that is in Him.
All God’s wisdom is hidden in the Spirit, and God lets it come to light for us for our profit and joy; and in God’s nearness that which is great will always be great, and that which is small will always be small. Praise be to God!
