367. Tend the Sheep

Jesus commanded Peter to “feed My lambs . . . tend My sheep . . . feed My sheep.” John 21.

When we think about the homes in which children grow up, the first thing these little ones need is nourishment so they can grow. According to tradition, children are considered adults when they graduate from school and have their confirmation ceremony (if that custom is practiced). They are then considered old enough to look after themselves. They are “sheep” that must be tended. Oh, how parents sin against their children when they do not supervise them in their youth time!

Peter was to tend the sheep. When young people have been saved and have received light from God, they must be tended. They run around like sheep wanting to look around in all directions. Before they realize it, their horns are stuck in one doctrine or another, and that brings them into bondage. The shepherd must recognize what has happened and free them.

When they are tended during the spiritual “awkward age,” they will eventually become much calmer. Then like sheep they can receive nourishment. If there is a “Peter” who loves Jesus, he can accomplish great things for the sheep and lambs.

But it is required of servants in the church that they are awake and alert. It is possible to be asleep while opportunities pass you by; meanwhile the sheep are going astray. An anointed eye, an open ear, and an alert mind combined with love for Jesus Christ will do wonders.
