330. The Commandments of Jesus Christ

Who is proud though he knows nothing? Who has a corrupt mind? Who is destitute of the truth? Who regards godliness as a means of gain?

It is those who teach other doctrines, not consenting to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ and to the doctrine which accords to godliness! 1 Tim. 6:1-3.

What are the wholesome words of Jesus Christ? They are all the things He has commanded us to observe. Matt. 28:19-20. They are all the exhortations that the wholesome Word gives us, all of God’s directions and promptings, and all of the Holy Spirit’s teaching. John 14:26.

All of the commandments of Jesus Christ are included here in this verse: “He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me.” John 14:21-23. Everything that pertains to walking in the light belongs here. 1 John 1:7.

Everyone who by God’s power and grace, guidance and leading lives this hidden life with Christ in God will little by little partake in the mysteries of Christ: He was manifested in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen by angels, preached among the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up in glory. 1 Tim. 3:16.

All the above is included in the wholesome words of Jesus Christ and the doctrine which accords to godliness.

“He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son.” 2 John 9.

Whoever despises the commandments of Jesus Christ, by saying that it is bondage to keep them, is puffed up and destitute of the truth. They know nothing; for it is the commandments of Jesus Christ that enlighten the heart and mind.

“If anyone comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, do not receive him into your house nor greet him.” 2 John 10.

If meetings of God’s people have become dry and sluggish, you should check to see whether the lampstand hasn’t been removed long ago, or whether greed and respect of persons are not the guiding forces. Judgment over such things has been at work since the days of old.
