251. The Household of Stephanas
Who is willing, as the household of Stephanas, to be devoted to the service of the saints? Blessed is everyone who dwells in such a house—one that is open for the saints. They were the firstfruits of Achaia, and they served the saints. 1 Cor. 16:15.
A young man who marries should marry a God-fearing woman and immediately seek to make his home a Bethany, a household of Stephanas, so that blessings and peace may be poured over it. How wretched it is that there are so many closed houses where people only care for themselves.
How can such behavior possibly be united with the kingdom of heaven?
“That you also submit [show all respect—Norw.] to such, and to everyone who works and labors with us.” Verse 16.
A home gains respect when it is open. You never know when such a house will receive angels as guests. A closed house is unequally yoked with the world, and the usual reason for this is: spare yourself! In such a house the (spiritual) air is nauseating. No son or daughter of peace is allowed to stay there, and no angel is allowed to cross its threshold. As a result everything inside becomes cold and chilly. The chill can be felt from the outside. Why is such a house closed? Because the hearts are closed to Christ and His saints. This sort of house is not a joy for anyone. Paul says, “Stephanas, Fortunatus, and Achaicus are here; they have refreshed my spirit and yours.” (Verses 17-18.)[Norw.]
If there is room in a person’s heart, then there is also room in their home, and he who has both—like Stephanas—refreshes not only the body, but also the spirit.
So open wide your doors for God’s people, those who bring the doctrine of Christ. “If anyone comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, do not receive him into your house nor greet him, for he who greets him shares in his evil deeds.” 2 John 10-11.
